So firstly, thanks to all for the continued support of the folk club in these cold and dark months- as ever, we're seeing a new faces appear along with a good number of our hardcore followers, thanks a lot! Keep the word spreading!

I've been pretty busy getting JC off the ground (we're full-time now!) and its doing rather well (whey!) but it has eaten a lot of the time I used to dedicate to the folk club promotion & website to keep things interesting and fresh. Everyone puts a lot of effort into the club out of shear goodwill, long may that continue, but to make sure it has the best opportunity to grow and get new faces through the door, the website will once again change, to allow for a few other helpers (notably Potter and Derek) to take the reigns and keep things 'fresh'.

Hopefully, this will allow me to do some good ol' fashioned printed promotion and PR too! The folk club has huuuuuge potential for 2010 and I want to make the most of it.

The next club meet is 16th APRIL, please come along and we'll make it a jolly-wizzy time!

Living in the moment?

The New Year, that arbitrary point on the calendar always seems to turn the most rational of us into a maudlin mawkish mood as the chimes count down. One foot in the future and a tear filled eye on the past. So why should the RFC blog be any different?

I thought I would point you toward some musicians that you might not have come across that you may enjoy in the coming months? If you end up liking even one of them that’s great, because music isn’t music till it’s listened to.

http://www.myspace.com/cwstoneking

The Aussie musical savant. Manchester band that deserve to do well.

Okay that’s the foot in the future bit, what about the past? We have all seen the lists on our TV yearly reviews of those who have passed on this year, but one you didn’t see was a little more personal, and a little closer to home. Our very own Betty. I was lucky enough to see her out and about (on more than one occasion) enjoying herself in what turned out to be her final weeks, accompanied by Derek and Elaine. She was the same Betty despite the challenges she was facing, smiling, eager to chat and keen to get on with her day. I was, and remain, awed by her strength of spirit. Our very own Paddy (who knew her far better than I) said to me that one of the things he remembers her for is turning up early at the folk club to light the candles. ‘That’s how I’ll always remember her,’ he said. ‘The light of the folk club.’

Indeed. God bless Betty, have it well lit when we get there.

Midge Noone

Cheers everyone!

A quick thank you to those who came on Friday and made it a very pleasurable evening and despite the weather and varying ailments, we still had an appreciative crowd and some new faces. This has resulted in a few later nights then desired, with music still continuing after a portion of the crowd have had to leave for buses and work the following morning. None the less, thankyou so much for your support!

We've decided to give a trial run of a 10 artist sign-up limit, that's 5 artists each half and Talgarth to host. Whilst 10 doesn't sound like a large amount in comparison to some of the numbers we've had (15, 16, 18) we think this number will allow everyone to enjoy a great diversity of acts, but also finish up in reasonable time, comfort and stops us having to race through the performers.

Sign-up will be on a first come first served basis so please turn up early to get your name down. If you arrive and we're full up, you'll be given the opportunity to sign up for the following folk club.

We're expecting to tweak this format as it goes, so please be patient and keep up the support for our lil club. As much as we'd like to fit everyone in on the sign-up sheet, it just now seems too impractical and in some respects, unfair. This club has a great chance to become one of the best regular music events in Cardiff, let's make it happen!

If you have any comments, suggestions etc. leave one at the end of this post (click 'comment')

Next folk club is 15th January, doors at 7pm, music to start at 8pm.

Thank you for your support in 2009 and we thank you in advance for your support in 2010. The club held its annual carols concert in St. Augustine's church and it was certainly a heart-warming event; seeing the 11th Century church lit up by candle-light, before having mince pies and cheese mushed into the carpet!

Photos are now up, click here to go to the gallery.

This Friday is the clubs Christmas club evening, we know plenty of people wanting to attend and play so get there early! Quince and Davey; in appearance, absolute polar opposites! One wouldn’t look out of place at a gathering of accountants, whilst the other, to be frank, would. But in playing together they became the Chang and Eng of the unplugged. The sweet, soaring sound of their strings hanging over everyone like watery sunlight, beautiful. Rob opened the night with a self penned, engaging and emotional outpouring about losing a loved one, and his philosophy on loss. It was a joy to witness. It’s not easy to perform something as personal as that. And what can you say about Inconsiderate Parking? The confidence of youth allied with no small measure of talent and passion. Any band that has 70% of the audience smiling is either doing something very right, or very, very wrong. If they do not make it to a Cambridge stage within a few years (with a few free wristbands for us lot!) I will eat one of my smaller, tastier hats.

We can all stand together in the shelter of the Cambridge beer tent, wearing our wellies and sun cream, supping warm ale and boastfully boring all within earshot on how we ‘knew them’ when they were starting out. We can wave them off on the first leg of their European tour at Cardiff bus station, and still know we have a bucket full of talent to sate us back at Whitehall Parade on a wet Friday night.

Isn’t Folk great!?

Keep Plucking y'all, Midge Noone

For your listening & viewing pleasure....

Rumney Folk Club favourites 'The Interalia' have got some new track recordings up on their Myspace. Too far from both weekends to be loved by anyone, the mid point on the incline of the rollercoasters ratcheted rise before the g-force induced smiling descent that is the weekend.

My grandfather knew how to take the sting out of mid week. We would go to Woolies (RIP), and as I stood in front of the pic n’mix he would plunge the shop into darkness by throwing the firemans switch outside, thirty seconds later after grubbing around in the blackness I had a bag full of mystery confectionary, and as the fluorescents and tills blinked back to life under the gaze of underpaid and apathetic staff, I parted with my payment and faced the sunshine.

Back home the bag was opened and shared. Of course there were too few of the ones that everyone (dentures aside) loved –chocolate éclairs, Bensons blackcurrant and liquorish- a fair few of the universal favorites-Black Jacks, pineapple cubes and Everton mints (Newcastle mints surely?)- and then there were the ones you couldn’t believe anyone would make as sweets in the first place. They tasted like Benylin and ear wax, smelt like a marsupials pouch, (Yes I do, I still have the letter from Lord Bath banning me for life from the Wallaby enclosure at Longleat), and had the texture of a ball bearing covered in belly button fluff. Even the dog wouldn’t entertain the idea of an experimental lick. And we all know dogs are not known for being fussy in the licking department. They sat at the bottom of the bag uneaten, unloved and misunderstood. Still, as Grandma would say, ‘Someone must like them? It would be a boring world if we were all the same.’

Very true, and the biggest strength of our beloved Rumney Folk Club. Its musical pic n’ mix. The broadest appreciation of what ‘folk’ music is, with none of the ‘folk fascism’ that plagues some clubs and stagnates us all. Musicians everybody loves, old favorites we all enjoy, the odd new hidden gem you never heard (tasted) before that wows you, and the ones at the bottom of the bag that it wouldn’t be the same without. We need them all because we are not just another folk club, and it would be a boring world if we were all the same.

Happy plucking y’all,

Midge Noone

Thankyou and updates

Last folk club saw Alun Parry take to the stage as our first ever featured artist....and it certainly was a special occasion! Alun is currently on a UK tour and we wish him all the best!

Visit:

www.parrysongs.co.uk

-----

October is set to be a great night with many artists (new visitors and old favourites alike) expressing interest in playing. This time of year is when the club comes into its own; the nights are drawing in and its lovely warm atmoshpere becomes nice and snug. Remember to bring a friend! Next club is the 16th October, Doors 7pm. Entry £3.50 (performers entry- FREE)

The clubs online store should be launching before the next club night, featuring a variety of artist CD's and a small amount of merchandise. We also would like to open this opportunity to anyone wishing to sell any manner of things such as second hand instruments or craft items. If you're interested, let JammyCustard know here

Along with all this, we will soon be releasing a handful of designs which will be available for Pre-order with delivery options available (i.e. collection at the club or post). The pre-orders will be at a special discounted price.

Stay tuned for more news coming soon, including some new events!

Ciao

Paddy

Next week: Alun Parry @ Rumney Folk Club

If you didn't already know, Liverpool's Alun Parry will be featuring at next folk club, the first evening in the club's history with a featured artist, which could pave the way to additional nights being put on in the same format in the future. Not only do we have a fantastic range of diversity in the line up, we've also reinforced that festival spirit with plenty of other things to do, including a farmers market and craft stalls, situated outside which will be free admittance! With all the performances taking place in the hall this year, the church will play host to musical workshops with guitarist Adrian Hughes and African hand-drummers, Sedai Sedai. Once again, the church & bell tower will be hosting its open day.

More news to follow, so keep an eye on the Myspace, and if you have a profile, be a friend!

Sweet Baboo's "Hello Wave" album launch

Hello! *waves

Sweet Baboo a.k.a. Thankyou to everyone for coming, whether you just sat back, relaxed and absorbed, or got up on stage a hammered out a tune.

All going well (in the design world its a risky phrase), we at Jammy Custard will have the first phase of the Rumney Folk Festival 09 launch ready next week. We've got ourselves a Myspace which we're building up now, as well as other things like poster designs and some limited edition runs of club and festival merchandise.

I'll be uploading some audio clips from the last Friday to stream/download from the media section very soon. If anybody has any requests in that respect, do let me know and I'll upload them or send them to e-mails if so wished.

Just one quick final note to clear things up with the guestbook (as people have asked me), if you regularly attend or play at the club, please do not be afraid to use the guestbook to promote yourself and your work. Its a community club, so help yourself and help others. Yep, if things get a bit excessive or completely irrelevant, I'll step in with fire and lots of chickens, you've been warned.

Oooh one more thing, you can actually post comments to blog articles if you so wish. Should be just underneath saying "comment".

Ciao for now.

Paddy

Caving Trip

Just checking I know how to use the Blogg ...

We will have to arrange a Rumney Folk Club Caving trip to Porth yr Ogof in the Brecon Beacons National Park ... after which we can retire to The Angel Inn and have a session. Whilst I've been busy applying final touches and the like to Jammy Custard, I've managed to squeeze a few updates into the site and most notably, here!- the Rumney Folk Club News blog. This just compiles all the news into one section and allows others to update without having to filter through a lot of coding or without us having to splash out on a fancy system. This of course relieves me of a bit of work (which I do enjoy) but also allows for info to get posted quicker. Grand stuff!

I know there's plenty of news to be posted, including the launch of the festival sub-site which will be up and running hopefully next month. More information including the line-up will be posted in the mean time.

I've been told a few people are eager to see some more photos, which I hope to get up sometime within the week. fingers crossed!

Anyway, I'll report back soon enough with more news and look forward to seeing you at the next folk club (15th May) with a 6x or a speck' hen in hand.

-Paddy-
