Photos, Christmas and Jazzy Stuff...

Hey everyone, finally managed to get around to putting some photos up. The club held its annual carols concert in St. Augustine's church and it was certainly a heart-warming event; seeing the 11th Century church lit up by candle-light, before having mince pies and cheese mushed into the carpet!

Photos are now up, click here to go to the gallery.

This Friday is the clubs Christmas club evening, we know plenty of people wanting to attend and play so get there early! Music will start at 8, (it will) with doors open at 7pm and £3.50 entry. Bring a hat and take a joyous yet relaxing break from the shopping!

Off-topic: Jammy Custard filmed Cardiff Ska/Fusion band "Funhouse" recently for their new album launch with great success and recommend them highly! Very much a live band (up to an 11-piece band!), so check out their Myspace to see where they're playing next. Check the video below!

About last Friday.

Last Fridays club had a few high points for me. Quince and Davey; in appearance, absolute polar opposites! One wouldn’t look out of place at a gathering of accountants, whilst the other, to be frank, would. But in playing together they became the Chang and Eng of the unplugged. The sweet, soaring sound of their strings hanging over everyone like watery sunlight, beautiful. Rob opened the night with a self penned, engaging and emotional outpouring about losing a loved one, and his philosophy on loss. It was a joy to witness. It’s not easy to perform something as personal as that. And what can you say about Inconsiderate Parking? The confidence of youth allied with no small measure of talent and passion. Any band that has 70% of the audience smiling is either doing something very right, or very, very wrong. If they do not make it to a Cambridge stage within a few years (with a few free wristbands for us lot!) I will eat one of my smaller, tastier hats.

We can all stand together in the shelter of the Cambridge beer tent, wearing our wellies and sun cream, supping warm ale and boastfully boring all within earshot on how we ‘knew them’ when they were starting out. We can wave them off on the first leg of their European tour at Cardiff bus station, and still know we have a bucket full of talent to sate us back at Whitehall Parade on a wet Friday night.

Isn’t Folk great!?

Grandparents and Pic n' Mix

Most suicides take place on a Tuesday, there is a reason for that, Wednesdays.

Wednesdays, that deathly, pregnant, mid week pause has always been the red headed step child of the week. Too far from both weekends to be loved by anyone, the mid point on the incline of the rollercoasters ratcheted rise before the g-force induced smiling descent that is the weekend.

My grandfather knew how to take the sting out of mid week. We would go to Woolies (RIP), and as I stood in front of the pic n’mix he would plunge the shop into darkness by throwing the firemans switch outside, thirty seconds later after grubbing around in the blackness I had a bag full of mystery confectionary, and as the fluorescents and tills blinked back to life under the gaze of underpaid and apathetic staff, I parted with my payment and faced the sunshine.

Back home the bag was opened and shared. Of course there were too few of the ones that everyone (dentures aside) loved –chocolate éclairs, Bensons blackcurrant and liquorish- a fair few of the universal favorites-Black Jacks, pineapple cubes and Everton mints (Newcastle mints surely?)- and then there were the ones you couldn’t believe anyone would make as sweets in the first place. They tasted like Benylin and ear wax, smelt like a marsupials pouch, (Yes I do, I still have the letter from Lord Bath banning me for life from the Wallaby enclosure at Longleat), and had the texture of a ball bearing covered in belly button fluff. Even the dog wouldn’t entertain the idea of an experimental lick. And we all know dogs are not known for being fussy in the licking department. They sat at the bottom of the bag uneaten, unloved and misunderstood. Still, as Grandma would say, ‘Someone must like them? It would be a boring world if we were all the same.’

Very true, and the biggest strength of our beloved Rumney Folk Club. Its musical pic n’ mix. The broadest appreciation of what ‘folk’ music is, with none of the ‘folk fascism’ that plagues some clubs and stagnates us all. Musicians everybody loves, old favorites we all enjoy, the odd new hidden gem you never heard (tasted) before that wows you, and the ones at the bottom of the bag that it wouldn’t be the same without. We need them all because we are not just another folk club, and it would be a boring world if we were all the same.

Happy plucking y’all,

Midge Noone

Thankyou and updates

Last folk club saw Alun Parry take to the stage as our first ever featured artist....and it certainly was a special occasion! Not a single song went past without being heartfelt by the audience and particularly by Alun himself in what was a very thought provoking hour.

Thanks to all those who came on that Friday night and a big thankyou to Alun. Not only for his performance, but also for his spurring encouragement for what's been acheived at our lil club, which I'm sure we'll build on and really make this club a notable place to visit and play.

Alun's latest CD "We can make the world stop" is available (with others!) from his site and is also available to download. Alun is currently on a UK tour and we wish him all the best!

Visit:

October is set to be a great night with many artists (new visitors and old favourites alike) expressing interest in playing. This time of year is when the club comes into its own; the nights are drawing in and its lovely warm atmoshpere becomes nice and snug. Remember to bring a friend! Next club is the 16th October, Doors 7pm. Entry £3.50 (performers entry- FREE)

The clubs online store should be launching before the next club night, featuring a variety of artist CD's and a small amount of merchandise. We also would like to open this opportunity to anyone wishing to sell any manner of things such as second hand instruments or craft items. If you're interested, let JammyCustard know here

Along with all this, we will soon be releasing a handful of designs which will be available for Pre-order with delivery options available (i.e. collection at the club or post). The pre-orders will be at a special discounted price.

Stay tuned for more news coming soon, including some new events!

Ciao

Festival sign-off

I've recovered!

Big thankyou to all those that helped before and during the festival, which I'm sure was enjoyed by everyone who came out in support.

Remember all the proceeds from the event go to the St. Augustine's Church Restoration Fund which likewise goes to the upkeep of the church hall itself. So again, thankyou!

If you have any feedback for us for next year, please please please get in touch or get a discussion going on the website guestbook.

Last minute stall opportunity

Hey everyone, our first village market has an admirable 13 stalls registered for the days outdoor proceedings, but we still have room for about 3 more stalls as a last minute opportunity!

If you, or if you know anyone who may wish to have a stall at the festival, please get in touch with me (PADDY!) by Wednesday morning.

A pitch is free to obtain, though we have been asking for any raffle prize donations, which would be very much welcome and for a good cause. Any money you receive on the day is quite simply yours!

We can supply a table and electricity if required, but we would appreciate you obtaining a gazebo for shelter from the elements. However, if this is a problem, please get in touch regardless and we'll see what we can do for you!

Information required will simply be: what you intend to sell/offer and your requirements regarding your pitch.

Untapped Brewing Co. @ Rumney Folk Festival

Last folk club saw a new introduction to the bar, Untapped Brewing Co. Ales! The drinks virtually sold out before the half way point and proved to be a grand ol' hit (well, new hit) with the club's crusaders and new visitors. Two ales were on offer, an 'all year round' dark ale entitled 'Eclipse' and a Golden ale called 'Sundown', both providing a quite distinct flavour.

Well we're pleased to announce that Untapped Brewing Co. are named supporters of this years Rumney Folk Festival and their ales will be available from the bar and outside in the village market, where you'll be able to find out more about the drinks and the company from one or two of the creators themselves!

Both drinks are available for listing and purchase, find out more via www.untappedbrew.com (keep an eye on this space!)

Presenting : Rumney Folk Festival 2009

Festival website and information:

www.myspace.com/rumneyfolkfestival

We've mustered up quite a festival this year! Not only do we have a fantastic range of diversity in the line up, we've also reinforced that festival spirit with plenty of other things to do, including a farmers market and craft stalls, situated outside which will be free admittance! With all the performances taking place in the hall this year, the church will play host to musical workshops with guitarist Adrian Hughes and African hand-drummers, Sedai Sedai. Once again, the church & bell tower will be hosting its open day.

More news to follow, so keep an eye on the Myspace, and if you have a profile, be a friend!

Sweet Baboo's "Hello Wave" album launch

Hello! *waves

Sweet Baboo a.k.a. Steven Black, who has stunned us all at recent folk clubs with his infectious performances, has launched his new album, "Hello Wave" on Businessman Records.

As well as an album, he has created a series of music videos, directed by Ryan Owen. One of the videos, for the song "Darlin’ If You Think My Songs Are Fun Then Darlin’ You Are Wrong" was filmed in the hall after the May folk club.

Sweet Baboo will be gracing us all with his presence on stage at the Rumney Folk Festival in September (more info on that soon, I promise!).

The album is available from the Businessman Records shop. You can also visit www.sweetbaboo.co.uk to view the videos and for more info!

IMPORTANT! 7:30PM new start time

As you would appreciate, we've had some really great folk clubs this year, with the number of new faces coming through the door and the number of artists on stage. Well, we've had enough people suggest starting earlier to accommodate for the number of artists and so we don't have to rush through them.

So the new start time will 7:30PM with doors opening at 7pm.

P.S. Unfortunately, I won't be at the next folk club as I'll be in Bristol grad ball, celebrating the end of student life for my wonderful girlfriend, Miranda.

Behind every great man, there's a woman pulling the chains....and this one's mental!

Paddy

You know that band.....

...That play a lot of inspired folk jigs and reels with a man sitting down all the time, trying to break a jug that he's probably just polished off? No? I'm not surprised, it's a rubbish description.

Well anyway, they now have a name! - I N T E R A L I A -

Interalia is Latin for "amongst other things" and I'm sure we're all looking forward for what is to come from this project, especially when they hit the festival stage in September.

Raise your glasses please for Phil, Mark, Elanor and Thomasin!

Check out....

Hello everyone! I've added a couple of links to the links page. Firstly, the Myspace address for The Afro Welsh Connection, so you to catch up on what this folk and African blended act is offering up in terms of songs and performances.

There is an eclectic mix of music which we have captured under the heading of Folk Rock. It goes from the traditional to contemporary but all with the basic essence of acoustic Folk running through it."

The line-up will consist of

Updates and a thankyou

Well, that was a busy night last week, but with a flurry of new faces and a packed hall, it was certainly an enjoyable one! Thankyou to everyone for coming, whether you just sat back, relaxed and absorbed, or got up on stage a hammered out a tune.

All going well (in the design world its a risky phrase), we at Jammy Custard will have the first phase of the Rumney Folk Festival 09 launch ready next week. We've got ourselves a Myspace which we're building up now, as well as other things like poster designs and some limited edition runs of club and festival merchandise.

I'll be uploading some audio clips from the last Friday to stream/download from the media section very soon. If anybody has any requests in that respect, do let me know and I'll upload them or send them to e-mails if so wished.

Just one quick final note to clear things up with the guestbook (as people have asked me), if you regularly attend or play at the club, please do not be afraid to use the guestbook to promote yourself and your work. Its a community club, so help yourself and help others. Yep, if things get a bit excessive or completely irrelevant, I'll step in with fire and lots of chickens, you've been warned.

Oooh one more thing, you can actually post comments to blog articles if you so wish. Should be just underneath saying "comment".

Ciao for now.

Jammy Custard Website Launched (finally!)

Matt and myself are finally taking the plunge. Jammy Custard Productions is effectively, up and running! We've just launched our full site www.jammycustard.co.uk

We would like to say thanks to all those at Rumney Folk Club for being so supportive over the past year. Its been a long time coming, but we're here now! Spread the word....pretty please! :0)

March Photo Gallery is up!

Sorry this one has taken a while. I know a few people have been asking after them.

I'm having a few problems with images at the moment, particularly the slideshow functions that allows you to go from one image to the other when they're full-size. In the mean-time you'll have to press the good ol' back button at the top of your browser!

Rumney Folk Club in the Capital Times!

The club is featured on page 7 of the Capital Times monthly newspaper this month. Rejoice!

The article includes a photo of the committee members and brief details of the club and its involvements with raising money for the St. Augustine's Church Restoration Fund.

The newspaper can be downloaded here (April not up yet).

Blogginess!

Hello all! Whilst I've been busy applying final touches and the like to Jammy Custard, I've managed to squeeze a few updates into the site and most notably, here!- the Rumney Folk Club News blog. This just compiles all the news into one section and allows others to update without having to filter through a lot of coding or without us having to splash out on a fancy system. This of course relieves me of a bit of work (which I do enjoy) but also allows for info to get posted quicker. Grand stuff!

I know there's plenty of news to be posted, including the launch of the festival sub-site which will be up and running hopefully next month. More information including the line-up will be posted in the mean time.

I've been told a few people are eager to see some more photos, which I hope to get up sometime within the week. fingers crossed!

Anyway, I'll report back soon enough with more news and look forward to seeing you at the next folk club (15th May) with a 6x or a speck' hen in hand.

-Paddy-
